Cognitive Edge was founded in 2005 by Dave Snowden. We believe in praxis and focus on building methods, tools and capability that apply the wisdom from Complex Adaptive Systems theory and other scientific disciplines in social systems.

We are the pioneer of the field of complexity, charting the way before complexity became “mainstream”. We created the concepts of Naturalising Sense-making, Distributed Ethnography, Apex Predator theory, and have developed the whole field now known as Anthro-complexity – complexity as experienced in human systems.

The Cynefin Centre is an action research and development hub that focuses primarily on applied complexity for social good. It is a membership-based organisation focused on working with not-for-profit, government and academic programmes.

The Cynefin Centre is Dave Snowden’s primary area of focus, with flagship research programmes into: healthcare; climate change; discrimination, power and conflict; “the numinous”; citizen engagement and democratic innovation.

We work at the limits, where research becomes practice, and we want to make a difference. We are a small team working with a distributed network of practitioners around the world. We are authentic to our commitments, our ethics, and the work of our members.

Complexity is about constant emergence. There are many areas to explore and much to pioneer. The Cynefin Lab explores the edges. We partner with other organisations like Cultivating Leadership to research and develop new spaces informed by Complexity. The focus of the Lab is research within commercial spaces. The Lab shares a close partnership with the Cynefin Centre, combining the latest from our academic research hub with commercial applications.

Cognitive Edge’s Cynefin College provides learning experiences to equip others to lead and manage in uncertainty. We offer digital self-paced learning (link) as well as virtual and in-person instructor-led courses and exploratories. Our aim is to increase the capacity of decision-makers everywhere to navigate uncertainty and deal with complexity.

Complexity requires us to act in the system. Cynefin Kinetic helps you to take action in a context-appropriate way, maintain momentum and harness the energy of motion in the system by liberating its human potential. By partnering with our global network of practitioners, we offer various products and services including thinking partnerships, workshop facilitation, executive briefings, strategic advisory services and SenseMaker® expertise.
