Virtual Cynefin® Basecamp is an immersive experience of complexity, introducing participants to the application of the Cynefin framework and its tools and methods through first-person participation. Currently offered in a highly engaging virtual environment, this course is a “must do” learning opportunity for those new to complexity and Cynefin®. For those who are well-read in the subject but want to refresh their knowledge, this course offers an opportunity to engage with others in learning about Cynefin practices in today’s context.

Course details

Four 3-hour virtually facilitated sessions.
Minimum participant requirement: 12

Maximum participant limit: 25

Meeting environments: Zoom.us; Google Slides / Docs; ConceptBoard

Course pre-work and in-between session study: Video lectures, reading (instructor / geography dependent)

Participants will:

  • Have an immersive experience of a complex facilitation and sense-making process
  • Explore the challenges of managing, leading and taking action in complex human systems
  • Play in the phase-shift from ordered to complex contexts and paradigms
  • Add new approaches to respond to uncertainty and complexity to your toolkit
  • Enhance their ability to contextualise issues and therefore to respond appropriately
  • Understand constraints and how we can manage them to influence change
  • Experience core Cynefin methods and tools to apply in thinking, decision-making and leadership
  • Understand the basics of a complexity-appropriate approach to strategy, forecasting and decision making

The methods and concepts learned and practiced in this course are applicable –

  1. to strategy, decision-making and leadership/management under conditions of uncertainty,
  2. for helping teams see differences between their perspectives and to gain a better understanding of their complex challenges
  3. in meeting or workshop environments tackling complex issues such as organisational change, culture, innovation, leadership development, and others; and,
  4. to the diverse professional and personal current challenges presented by participants.

This virtual course offers an enhanced interactive online learning environment, where a cohort of attendees from diverse backgrounds embark on a shared learning journey about how to apply Cynefin® and related methods in their organizations.

Facilitators

This edition of Cynefin BaseCamp will be facilitated by Dan Walsh and facilitator-in-training Hans Samios, supported by Donna Glanvill and Dave Snowden.

Daniel Walsh is an experienced consultant and coach dedicated to elevating professionals’ ability to manage complex challenges. He honed his expertise during an 18-year tenure at Intel Corp. in engineering, management, and product development. Daniel has a wealth of practical insights from leading transformative initiatives across various sectors, including tech, finance, energy, and pharmaceuticals. As an MIT alumnus with an M.S. in Systems, he embraces praxis by blending theoretical knowledge, heuristics, and hands-on practice. Daniel’s engaging and pragmatic teaching style makes complex concepts relatable and engaging for a diverse audience. His practice spans organizational transformations, entrepreneurship, Lean, Agile, Product Management, and applied complexity methods. He lives in Austin, TX, USA, exploring autonomy, team science, permaculture, and value co-creation between users and products.

Hans Samios is widely recognized for his expertise and insights in the product and organizational development circles. As a consultant, he’s adept at utilizing lean, agile, complexity, portfolio and product management, and organizational design approaches to drive organizational effectiveness. Hans’ distinct strength lies in his coaching approach, which emphasizes practical understanding and real-world application. This ensures that participants not only grasp concepts but are also equipped to implement them across various sectors, from software product and IT applied to medical, health, construction, resources, and fintech industries. At the heart of Hans’ passion is the profound joy he derives from witnessing the transformative impact of organizational change on a company’s effectiveness and, more importantly, the uplifting effect it has on the individuals involved.

Cancellations & Rescheduling

Voluntary cancellations by registrants are permitted at any time prior to the course start and a refund for the amount paid will be provided less a 10% refund processing fee. Substitutions are permitted at any time as well as rescheduling attendance to an alternate session within a year of the original course start date. Substitutions and/or rescheduling of courses for discounted tickets may be subject to rescheduling restrictions and/or fee supplements.

Cognitive Edge reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule training sessions. In the event of cancellation or rescheduling, a registered attendee can request a full refund of course fees. Refunds will be processed within ten (10) business days of refund requests.
