As we enter this new year, many of us feel as if we are in a state of continuous confusion, like nothing is clear. So, what do we do? Do we rush to try to resolve and clarify, or is it better to stay in not knowing for a while?

Aporia is a state of mind where we can make that confusion generative – become curious about that confusion, and embrace the contradictions rather than trying to avoid, reframe or force their complexity into neat, tidy solutions. It opens up multiple possible pathways we can take, creating options from confusion.

This Masterclass dives deep into this space, highlighting the significance of the Aporetic / Confused domain as an entry point into the Cynefin sense-making process and exploring the rich pathways this opens up for issues and processes to flow through the domains.

Participants will explore the multiple pathways of movement through the Cynefin® framework, as well as methods and practices to shift issues out of the realm of confusion and into other domains where they can be managed appropriately.

Course details

“Although we cannot completely control what happens we can influence it, and we can do a lot to make some behaviours and outcomes very unlikely. Good management has always been about dealing with uncertainty and doing so in such a way as to leave options open as long as possible.” – Dave Snowden

Masterclass Participants will experience:

● Explore the relevance and application of the Cynefin® framework with Dave Snowden as he shares how we can best navigate these confusing times

● Explore movement in liminal Cynefin® spaces and useful methods and tools to apply

● Unlock the Aporetic/Confused (previously Disorder) domain as an entry point into the sense-making process and map multiple paths from there

● Tangible intervention possibilities, including three key things that leaders and decision-makers navigating times of confusion and crisis can do

● Principles and practices for managing in complexity – a fresh look at what can and can’t be managed and monitored, and how to do so effectively

● Explore five pathways to move out of the Aporetic zone, existing methods to achieve this and the risks and opportunities associated with each

● Apply these concepts to your own work, with rich opportunities to share issues and discussing challenges and application with fellow Cynefin practitioners and facilitators

A new Crisis and Complexity handbook based on Cynefin® is just about to be published. The authors are the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, and the Cynefin Centre. It aims to provide sense-making support to the European policymaking process. It obviously has wider impact and this Masterclass will help get those already qualified and experienced in the use of Cynefin ready to take up the wider opportunities this publication will offer.

Who is this course for?

This Masterclass is intended for practitioners with existing knowledge of Cynefin®, assuming that participants have already encountered the basic Cynefin® framework. If you are looking for introductory training, please consider our Cynefin® BaseCamp as an alternative or contact us to discuss your needs.
