The ups and downs of waiting for Xmas ..

Nope this is not a rollercoaster blog post to match Dave's visit to Monterey, but rather a reference to my wife's and my own experience of the slowest / fastest pregnancy in the East - fastest because it is compressed, and slow because of the risks involved.  Many CE practitioners and customers know that Stacey and I are expecting twins, and unusual ones at that, and often ask how they are going ..

To bring everyone up to speed, we are in the 20s (weeks that is, not ages), and so we are off to scans every fortnight.  At 20 weeks we had a completely clean bill of health for both babies, which was cause for celebration.  The specialist told us he was pleasantly surprised that there weren't any complications.

22 weeks brought the news that there was some entanglement of the cords, which was the news we didn't want to get - but the docs couldn't advise how tightly they were tangled, or what could be done to minimise risk of more entanglement.

At 24 weeks we found out that one baby was a fair bit smaller than the other - 'growth restrictions' in multiple babies is fairly common (about 50%) but it can be dangerous, leading to reduced blood flow to the brain of the smaller baby.  However, unlike cord entanglement, it is a gradual process that can be monitored.  It just confirmed that they would be delivered early.

Today was the 26 week scan, and the good news was that both babies had a growth spurt, and even better news was that the smaller baby had caught up to the other.  They're both now about 800 grams, plus or minus a margin for error ... the docs were as surprised as us, it was truly an inexplicable, complex event.

So at this stage, the best guess of the docs is that we should be delivering somewhere around 31, 32 weeks - the end of September, which was when Dave and I were planning to do some work in Singapore!  But these things are way beyond our control - you can expect my own availability to be a little hampered around that time.

Two weeks to the next scan, then weekly after that ...
