The third, now posted for download, is Dave Snowden’s Narrative Research, which lays the foundation for the use of narrative research and inquiry methods not only in the project but broadly in the field of research and consultancy.
To recap – the first article posted for download, Complex Dynamical Systems Theory , authored by Dr Alicia Juarrero, gave an introduction to the field of complexity theory and the second, Signifier Mapping by Dr Beth Meriam, principle anthropologist engaged on the project, documented the signifier design process.

As a private operating foundation based in San Francisco, USA, the Stupski Foundation aims to transform the American public education system so that children of minority ethnic and lower socioeconomic backgrounds are equipped for college, career and ultimately life.

Central to this transformation is the need to understand, straight from the narratives of eduators, what constitutes ‘breakthrough learning’ and what supports and scales it.

In using SenseMaker® to gather and analyse narratives from teachers and principals, Stupski hopes to provide a way to empower teachers around the country by providing them a voice in the crowded debate around US education reform. The results will support the research component of Stupski’s broader learning phase, the intention of which is to co-design learning initiatives with partners and initial prototypes of a knowledge platform.

Dave Snowden executive seminar tour in the United States

The challenge of doing more with less is ever present in both the public and private sectors. In the 1980s the big idea was process management and re-engineering, replacing the functionally orientated structures of the preceding decades. Over the years those ideas have achieved significant results, but they no longer offer the opportunity for radical and progressive change and are in danger of becoming over extended and over complicated.

The Leading through Complexity one-day executive seminar, led by Dave Snowden and based on his award-winning work, is designed to introduce participants to radical new ways to:

focus on sustainability, using the natural capabilities of customers, citizens and staff;

shift from fail-safe design to a more flexible and adaptive process of safe-fail experiments leading to more resilient outcomes;

use the distributed intelligence of workforces and markets to transform decision making and achieve long term effectiveness;

see strategy as a constantly evolving articulation of emergent possibilities, shorting decision cycles, increasing robustness; and

understand the new simplicity inherent in an ecological approach to management.

This seminar will be run in the following cities:

Chicago on 18 October

Transitions are significant change processes in people’s lives and the transition from being a student to being a professional involves changes in thinking, behaviour, identity, capability and performance.

The University of Surrey has an international reputation for preparing and enabling students to make this transition into the professional world through a curriculum that involves them in completing a year in business or industry. While it has a wealth of information on the outcomes of the experience and some data on the midpoint of their experience, knowledge about how students experience and manage the transition from university to work is lacking.

The University is using SenseMaker® to gather and make sense of transition narratives. Armed with this knowledge the intention is to develop better guidance to prepare students and refine practices for preparing and supporting them during this important transition.

It is anticipated that one of the benefits will be to feedback the results of the survey quickly to students so that they can compare their own experience with the other students on placement and perhaps stimulate action where experiences are less than satisfactory.

For more information, please contact Prof Norman Jackson at the University of Surrey.

How is society experiencing adapting to climate change? Are there patterns in peoples' experiences of adapting that we could learn from to improve societal adaptation?

A team of scientists from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), Southern Cross University (SCU), and from the USA (the Southeast Climate Consortium) are hoping to find answers to these questions through an innovative application of recently developed methods for analysing the stories that people tell each other everyday; over a cup of coffee, in a lift or around the dinner table. Do people in different countries or regions have similar or very different experiences of what helps or hinders their ability to adapt? Using Cognitive Edge's SenseMaker® suite in conjunction with well established methods from social psychology and cognitive anthropology we seek to explore patterns in the stories people tell of their adaptation experiences. The information will be used to inform those keen to enhance the adaptive capacity of societies around the world.

This project is being facilitated by Emerging Options Pty Ltd.

For more information, please contact Tim Lynam at the CSIRO or Chris Fletcher at Emerging Options.
