Not good news

I think I may need to rethink my online ordering of books etc. given this report

I received an email from Dominic Kelleher today with a link to this article. It doesn't surprise me but it does disappoint me, particularly the diversionary replies from Amazon. While I don't worry about hard work and have little empathy with people who complain about working hard hard, there are seriously depressing undertones to the whole manner in which Amazon are treating staff that may have long term repercussions for the firm. I certainly will be re-evaluating my support for Amazon (although my main use of Amazon are for second hand books) I normally buy my on-line (and off-line since I live sufficiently close to Oxford) books from Blackwells bookshop. However, it is a difficult situation because we have little information about how individual companies treat their staff and we are likely to be supporting organisations who bully staff without our knowing it.

eh? has slavery made a comeback?

Andrew Curry:

I'm a little surprised you're surprised. Amazon's attitude to labour relations, in the UK and the US, have been fairly widely reported over quite a few years now. Good to see it spelled out starkly in the Times, along with the corporate-speak in response. It's not very fond of trades unions either: http://www.word-power.co.uk/viewPlatform.php?id=23.
