The way to learning begins with delight

Thanks to Wayne for this link to an interview with Philip Pullman of Golden Compass fame who rightly accuses C.S.Lewis of the heresy of Gnosticism.  Personally I could never stand the Narnia books, I never made it through the first and sitting through the film almost made me sick.  The Screwtape Letters represent religion in the worst of all possible aspects.

A wonderful quote from the end: The way to learning begins with delight

In terms of delighting in new ways of looking at information - some time ago I came across this search engine which displays the results in graphical form: http://www.kartoo.com/ and just today I came across this one from the same stable which does a different sort of mapping of the results (and interestingly gives a different form of the map on every search, helping to increase the diversity of thinking of the searcher: http://beta.kvisu.com/index_en.khtm?lg=en

Paul Tudor:

A pity then, that Pullman did not find a more delightful production team to film his book/s.

Having chosen the worst week of an otherwise glorious summer to go camping at Matauri Bay (gorgeous NZ beach and the resting place of the Rainbow Warrior), our family ended up making the trek to nearby Kerikeri to check out the old, slightly rundown picture theatre. The Golden Compass was the only thing playing.

We all found it a dreadful bore. My eight year old said that she "Liked the polar bear, but the story was not much fun..." I spent most of the movie looking out for Nicole Kidman's gowns (which were magnificent - must look up the costumeier's name).

One though - perhaps a New Zealander may have made a better fist of it?

I must admit I thought the film was OK to be honest - see here
